China Mobile Reports First-Quarter Profit Rose 4.1% to 25.8 Billion Yuan

China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile carrier by subscribers, on Friday reported its profit grew 4.1% in the first quarter of 2018, as surging revenue from data services offset declines in use of traditional voice services.

China Mobile reported its profit rose to 25.8 billion yuan ($4.1 billion) in the three months through March from 24.8 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose by a more modest 0.8% to 185.5 billion yuan.

Like many carriers around the world, China Mobile and its domestic peers are banking on data services to boost their revenue in the face of declining demand for traditional voice services.

The company said its average customer used 2.23 gigabytes of data per month in the first quarter, up 18% from a year earlier. But total voice usage fell 7% to 871.9 billion minutes.
