- WTO Says It Has Received China Complaint Over Proposed U.S. Tariffs
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has received a request from China for consultations with the United States regarding proposed new U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, the WTO said Thursday.
A request for consultations at the WTO often precedes a full legal challenge.
China made its WTO filing after the U.S. on Tuesday unveiled a list of $50 billion worth of Chinese imports that will be subject to a proposed 25% punitive tariff for alleged unfair trade practices.
China itself then announced retaliatory tariffs on a similar value of U.S. goods.
The WTO filing came before the Trump administration's latest announcement, also on Thursday, that the U.S. would consider a new round of tariffs on an additional $100 billion worth of Chinese imports.
