Alibaba's Taobao Marketplace Included on Latest U.S. Trade Representative's List of Notorious Markets for Piracy

Alibaba's Taobao consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace was included on a U.S. government list of "notorious" markets for trade in pirated goods for a second straight year, according to a list released on Friday in the U.S.

"A high volume of infringing products reportedly continue to be offered for sale and sold on Taobao.com and stakeholders continue to report challenges and burdens associated with (intellectual property) enforcement on the platform," the U.S. Trade Representative's Office said in a statement explaining Taobao's repeat on the list.

"Alibaba has undertaken efforts, some within the last six months, to curb the offer and sale of infringing products on Taobao.com, and some right holders report an improved outlook as a result," the office said.

"At the same time, the prevalence of infringing listings and sales continues to be a challenge and there are additional steps Alibaba must take to address ongoing concerns."

It added that small and medium-sized businesses continue to have problems accessing and using takedown procedures on Taobao when pirated goods are discovered.
