- China Railway’s Freight Volume Rises After 5 Years of Declines
Freight volume handled by China’s railway system rose 10% in 2017, reversing five years of declines and reflecting an improvement of the economy.
China Railway Corp., the state railway operator, said Tuesday freight volume in 2017 totaled 2.9 billion tons, rising 10.1% increase from the previous year.
Strong freight business boosted CRC’s financial performance. According to the company, its freight revenue rose 17% to 695.8 billion yuan ($107.2) last year.
More than 3 billion passenger trips were made through the railway network in 2017, up 9.6% from the previous year, CRC data showed. Of that total, 1.7 billion passenger trips were made on new high-speed trains, an 18.7% increase from 2016.
CRC expects the freight volume to reach 3.02 billion tons this year, up 3.4% from 2017, and the company can provide a total of 3.25 billion passenger trips in 2018.
